• Abstract

Septic arthritis can lead to joint damage and severe deformities if not treated on time. A triple deformity of knee joint is a result of such neglected infection causing flexion, adduction and internal rotation deformity. This deformity can affect the range of motion of joint and thus affects quality of life of patient. This is a case of 36-year-old female, having triple deformity of knee caused due to delay in treatment of septic arthritis. The primary symptoms were fever, pain and swelling around knee joint which was not adequately managed. Which on and off clinical features of knee joint, patient neglected the problem, which later resulted in deformity and destruction of knee joint, which was diagnosed with X-rays and CT scan of joint with Blood investigations suggestive of acute on chronic infection. The patient was then managed after 10 years of disease progression with aggressive debridement of joint with focus on infection control followed by rehabilitation to improve post - operative mobility and function of joint. At six months follow up, the patient had notable improvement in terms of lain reduction and joint stability. This case is important for need of prompt diagnosis and intervention in septic arthritis to prevent complications like triple deformity. Treatment delay can cause irreversible damage to joint and long-term functional impairments.
