This study presents the theory of landscape science and the relationship between landscape science and conservation. It also identifies landscape as a basic unit in the management and conservation of natural resources. The landscape, a product of the interaction between geographical, climatic, and ecological factors, is increasingly changing due to human and natural environmental impacts. Phu Quoc Island, a large island in the Gulf of Thailand, is undergoing rapid urbanization, altering landscape quality and posing many challenges to the local (natural and cultural) ecosystem. In such a context, a landscape assessment is necessary to determine the level of conservation. A weighted comprehensive evaluation method was used to classify and evaluate landscape units on Phu Quoc Island with 16 criteria. The results indicate that some landscape areas need strict protection due to their high biodiversity value, while others achieve medium or low conservation levels associated with economic development due to human activities. Finally, the study provides a spatial distribution of conservation levels on Phu Quoc Island and uses it as a basis to propose measures to preserve the values of this valuable island system.
