• Abstract

Suicide is one of the major mental health problems and is the leading cause of death among people aged 15 to 29 years. This study examines the predictive influence of the social determinants of health (SDOH), including gender, household income, bullying, history of child abuse, resilience, and health-seeking behavior, on suicidal ideation among Indonesian adolescents living in Depok, West Java, Indonesia. Through proportional random sampling, 334 adolescent students from 5 schools in Depok were recruited. Data were collected using a demographic questionnaire; the Bullying and Cyber Bullying Scale for Adolescents; the Pediatric Adverse Childhood Experiences Screening and Related Life-events Screener; the Teen, Child, and Youth Resilience Measure; the General Help-Seeking Questionnaire; and the Revised-Suicide Ideation Scale. Logistic regression was conducted to test predictive factors such as gender, household income, bullying, history of child abuse, resilience, and health-seeking behavior. The model predicted suicidal ideation by 75.7% (Nagelkerke R2 = 0.402), accounting for 49.3% of the variance. However, only four of the six identified factors (bullying, history of child abuse, resilience, and health-seeking behavior) significantly predicted suicidal ideation. SDOH factors such as bullying, history of child abuse, resilience, and health-seeking behaviors may predict suicidal ideation among adolescents. Future research would benefit from investigating the causal link between SDOH and suicidal ideation.
