Prenatal mood disorders represent a significant public health concern, affecting a substantial number of expectant mothers worldwide. This comprehensive review examines the intricate relationship between prenatal mood disorders and neonatal well-being. The review encompasses a broad spectrum of mood disorders, including depression, anxiety, and stress, and explores their prevalence, risk factors, and potential impact on both maternal and neonatal outcomes. Drawing upon a diverse array of studies, this review delves into the complex biological, psychological, and social mechanisms that contribute to the manifestation and progression of prenatal mood disorders. Special attention is given to the intricate interplay of hormonal fluctuations, genetic predispositions, and environmental stressors in shaping the mental health landscape during pregnancy. Furthermore, the review critically evaluates the literature on the effects of prenatal mood disorders on neonatal development, encompassing aspects such as birth outcomes, neurodevelopmental trajectories, and long-term behavioral outcomes. Insightful analysis of the potential mediating and moderating factors in this relationship adds depth to our understanding of the nuanced pathways through which maternal mental health may impact neonatal well-being. The evidence presented in this review underscores the importance of comprehensive prenatal care, early detection, and intervention strategies to mitigate the potential adverse effects of prenatal mood disorders on both maternal and neonatal health. The implications of these findings extend beyond clinical practice, informing public health policies and emphasizing the need for integrated approaches that address the multifaceted nature of prenatal mental health. In conclusion, this comprehensive review contributes to the current body of knowledge by elucidating the intricate connections between prenatal mood disorders and neonatal well-being. By providing an overview of existing research, this study aims to guide future investigations and interventions, fostering a holistic understanding of the factors influencing mothers' and newborns' health during this critical developmental period.
