• Abstract

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) reconstruction is a complex field aimed at restoring function and alleviating symptoms in patients with TMJ disorders. The ramus condyle unit, comprising the mandibular and adjacent ramus, plays a crucial role in TMJ function and reconstruction. This comprehensive review provides an overview of surgical techniques utilizing the ramus condyle unit in TMJ reconstruction and examines their outcomes. Autogenous grafts and alloplastic prostheses are discussed, highlighting their advantages, limitations, and outcomes. Patient selection criteria, preoperative assessment, and postoperative management strategies are also explored. Objective measures, including imaging studies, functional assessments, and subjective patient satisfaction evaluations, are emphasized for outcomes assessment. The implications for clinical practice underscore the importance of tailored treatment plans and multidisciplinary collaboration. Recommendations for future research include comparative studies to elucidate long-term efficacy and safety and exploration of advancements in biomaterials and regenerative therapies. This review aims to enhance understanding and inform clinical decision-making in TMJ reconstruction.
