• Abstract

Myocarditis, characterised by heart muscle inflammation, challenges athletes' cardiovascular health and athletic aspirations. This review comprehensively explores myocarditis in athletes, covering pathophysiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis, management, and return-to-play protocols. It emphasises the significance of early diagnosis, tailored management strategies, and gradual reintegration into physical activities. The multidisciplinary approach involving cardiologists, sports medicine experts, coaches, and athletes ensures safe return-to-play processes. The review also highlights the potential long-term implications, psychological considerations, and emerging research areas. Notably, this review underscores the vital need for ongoing research, preventive measures, and the pursuit of innovative therapeutic targets. As the intersection of myocarditis and athletics evolves, continued collaboration and research remain imperative to safeguard athletes' cardiac health and optimise their performance.
